Mars 2018 opposition
The 2018 opposition was more favorable than the 2016. It was to happen in the summer, when sky conditions are better. I also upgraded my camera to a ZWO ASI290MC, which would improve resolution. Mars reached a maximum size of 24.3" in late July but I was not able to image until August due to Mars sandstorms obscurring the planet. Additionally, the planets declination had it in Capricorn, which meant I was imaging through thick atmosphere. Despite these handicaps, my results were better than 2016 and one can see some effects of the sand storms. The August 16 image shows a very bright Hellas Basin area below Sytis Major. The next opposition would be better placed for imaging just like the 2005 opposition.
