NGC 253 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation of Sculptor and is part of the Sculptor galaxy group. This galaxy is a large object that is often overlooked by northern hemisphere observers because of its low declination (-25 degrees). It is also probably why Charles Messier missed it from his list (Caroline Herschel discovered it in 1783). It is notable for the dust lanes and mottled appearance visible in this image.
